In 2000, the war in Peru against the guerrilla forces of the Shining Path group supposedly ended. Recently, these guerrilla forces have shown that they are still thriving, using the cover of the Andes Mountains to protect themselves. Their source of income, for the most part is through the production of cocaine.
Coca plants are grown in the higher regions of the country, and under the shade of higher trees. A large portion of a farmers coca crop usually goes to produce cocaine, but it is still legal because in Peru, they use it similarly to how chewing tobacco is used in the U.S.
Lately police have ben cracking down more than ever; this following reports that Peru was number two in cocaine production behind only Columbia.
